Damascus Steel
As Unique as a Fingerprint
Known for its mesmerizing patterns, Damascus steel is no longer limited to antique Damascene swords or Japanese sushi knives. More than ever, it can be found in modern households.
As distinct as a fingerprint, there is no mistaking one Damascus steel knife from another.
Damascus steel is a composite of two or more materials. In former times, layers of hard steel and soft iron were welded together to make strong and flexible blades. Nowadays, two kinds of stainless tool steels are used to produce a composition akin to powder metallurgy steels.
Steel slices are typically welded together to form a billet, which is then folded to the desired number of layers. Patterns are created by hammering in small objects or by twisting the billet. In selecting the best Damascus steel for a particular application, various factors must be taken into account, such as steel combination, tempering, and cutting geometry. Patterns have comparatively little influence on a knife's cutting properties.
An exceptional work of blacksmithing art is born when multiple bands of Damascus steel are combined or pieced together like a mosaic.
In our knife making workshops, you are welcome to choose from a wide range of Damascus steels for use in your own knife.
